Monday morning musing... a little late
Thursday, Feb. 03, 2005 - 8:56 a.m.

I wrote this on Monday morning and meant to post it but I forgot.

Maybe it is the fact that the sun is shining. Maybe it is the bearable temperatures for a January 31st morning. Maybe it is the secret disappointment in the minds of all of the adults in the city who realize that, unlike the past two Mondays, this one is not a snow day. Whatever the reason, drivers left their brains at home this morning as they headed out on their Monday morning commute to work.

When I left the house this morning on my own personal journey, I was at least five minutes late. Which generally means I will get to the top of the snow bank on the far end of the Sobey's parking lot just in time to see my bus pull up at my stop. Which, unfortunately, is down the snow bank and directly diagonal across the intersection. I might be able to scale the snow bank in time to get across one of the crosswalks, but there is no way I can get across both. Although some mornings the bus driver is really nice. Maybe he sees the sheer look of panic in my eyes from across the intersection and decides to have pity on me. Or he could secretly be hoping to see me take a header into one of the many snow banks I encounter on the way to the bus. This morning, there was a pleasant surprise. I got to the top of the snow bank, and I could still see the crowd of people waiting for the bus. So this Monday was not going to be so bad after all!

I take my time getting down the hill, and take a leisurely stroll across both crosswalks. I notice that while the light is actually green, people are not moving. And I can almost feel the veins in people's heads throbbing from where I am standing. Once I reach my stop, I take the time to examine the situation and discover the cause of all of this negativity. Looking up the street, in the direction I need to go in order to get to work, I notice that the traffic is not moving. The backs of the cars look like a string of Christmas lights, their red brake lights twinkling on and off as they attempt to get closer to their destination, inch by inch. But the most interesting part of this little parade of human misery is the way the drivers are reacting.

The light turns green, but the traffic on the other side of the intersection is not moving at all. The logical (and legal) thing to do is stay where you are until the traffic on the other side of the intersection starts to move, then when it is safe to do so, you move through the intersection. Sounds easy enough. Apparently not for the drivers this morning! Here is how this morning goes: Light turns green. Traffic on the other side of the intersection does not move. The driver on my side of the intersection guns it and tears into the intersection, then screeches to a halt about 10 to 15 feet later, and just sits there. The light changes back to red, and now the drivers on the right hand side of this genius cannot go anywhere. Is it because the traffic in that direction is slow as well? Not at all. In fact, the road between this intersection and the one up the street is completely clear. The sun is beaming down gleefully on the wet pavement, taunting the driver who is stuck beside Mr. Impatient.

Now if this had happened once or even twice, I would have just shrugged it off. But this happened at least 8 times! And out of those 8 times, 3 times the car behind the genius who blocked the intersection decided that this was a really good idea. The result? All lanes of traffic were blocked. No one was moving anywhere, temperatures were rising, and the throbbing veins were starting to make the pavement move under my feet. I fully expected to see at least one head explode! And the whole time, my bus is sitting down the road, just far enough away that if I start walking towards it and the traffic clears, it will sail right past me.

The traffic indeed clears and my bus finally pulls up to my stop. I look ahead as I get on the bus and see that whatever was causing the delay seems to be gone, and the traffic is flowing normally. I have to admit I am somewhat disappointed that there were no accidents, and that no one went ballistic at the morons pulling into the intersection and decided to take the matters into their own hands by gently nudging the cars out of the way... Where is their sense of adventure? Come on people! It's Monday morning and some yahoo without two spare brain cells to rub together is blocking you from your destination. What are you going to do about it??

But my faith in humanity is somewhat restored. There is still hope! As I sat on my sideways facing seat on the bus and prepared for a very long bus ride, I happened to look at the person sitting across from me. They are one of the lucky ones who can read while on the bus. At first I was just jealous that she had a way to pass their time, and didn't have to spend the whole trip trying not to look at the person directly across from her. Then I noticed the book she was reading, and my day was instantly brighter.

"If you like the books, Video Difference has the BBC production of the whole series on DVD. It is based on the BBC radio production and has much of the same cast. I have the radio production at home too and I love it?"

"Is it the live action version?"

"Oh yeah! And it is awesome. Incredibly cheesy. Zaphod's extra head doesn't move and looks like it was going to fall off at any second."

"Did you hear that they are making it into a feature film?"

... And so on. The people around us are giving us strange looks because most of what we are saying sounds like gibberish to the untrained ear. And a few glance at the book, confused by a book entitled "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe." But we are happy. On a long morning commute, we have each briefly encountered a kindred spirit. The day has been salvaged thanks to Mr. Douglas Adams and his "increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker trilogy." Maybe the morning commuters just need to take the advice offered on the front of fictional book and "Don't Panic."
