Time to start being more responsible with my spending
Friday, Dec. 17, 2004 - 11:25 a.m.

I have been thinking a lot lately about how Neal lives and thinking I need to take some cues from him. He rarely every spends money on anything that is not either bills or food. He has spending money that he uses for things like movies once in a while, and going out for drinks and stuff, but other than that, he just doesnt spend money. And he seems quite content with the whole thing.

I need to start doing that. I just went through my bank account, and went back to the beginning of November. Just for the hell of it, I totaled up how much I spent on eating out while at work, going out for supper, and buying "stuff" that I may or may not have actually need. I also counted the payments I made on my credit cards, because chances are I didnt need most the the stuff I charged to those either. The numbers I came up with are, well, gross.

This month alone, I could have saved almost $550 by not just randomly eating at restaurants and buying stuff. Last month was about $1,200 or more. And there are still balances on my line of credit and credit cards I want to get paid off. Now don't get me wrong... It is not an unmanageable amount, and I have three credit cards plus a line of credit, none of which are maxed out. The line of credit is about half full, and one of the credit cards is about the same, but they are both really low interest, and I transferred balances from the other high interest cards to these account.

Some of the stuff I bought was stuff I actually needed There are a few article of clothing I needed to get. And there are a few charges on the cards that are for my theatre company, that I will get paid back for sometime soon, plus there is still one charge for the burlesque society on there too. And there are a few things that were splurges, but were things I wanted to do for a treat. Like taking 3 friends out to a chinese buffett. And that was done after I got my extra pay. (There are two monhts out of the year where we get paid three times, so you get a kind of free paycheque out of it)

I still want to be able to go out and buy things, but I want to really cut back on it. Just do things once in a while, and make them that much more special by having them be treats, rather than the norm. Espeically things like eating out while at work. (I say that knowing that I am probably going out for lunch today too, but I was out at a staff party last night and havent been home for a few days to cook, and need food)

So I am going to start thinking much harder about the things I spend my money on. Not charge so many things to my credit cards because it is easy to forget about those things. Just make payments on the cards and not really worry too much about them. I do pay much more than the minimum balance on the cards, so that is always a good thing.

Time to start enjoying all the things in life that are fun to do but dont cost a fortune. Take advantage of my two for one coupons, and find things to do outside. Spend more time just hanging out. Having a drink or two is no big deal. Buying supper three times a week is really excessive. And time to start planning out my meals in advance and shopping accordingly.
